Volunteer Mentor

At ReachOut, we believe that with the right support every young person can reach their full potential. ReachOut is a mentoring charity working with children in disadvantaged communities to raise aspirations and help them grow in character and improve academic skills. We improve self-confidence and develop numeracy, literacy, communication and memory skills whilst reinforcing our core values of fairness, self-control, good judgement and staying power. We do this through one-to-one mentoring with positive role models and team activities to promote leadership, trust and responsibility.

We are now training volunteer Mentors for the 2021/22 Academic year to work with students aged 9-16 across Manchester. Can you spare 1-2 hours a week in 2021-22 to help a young person grow in character and attainment?

The Projects

  • ReachOut Club – One-to-one and group mentoring for young people in primary school. Projects run on weekday afternoons, approx. 3.30-5.30pm between October 2021 – April 2022.
  • ReachOut Academy – One-to-one and group mentoring for young people in secondary school. Projects run on weekday evenings, 6pm-7pm between October 2021 – June 2022.

Currently training for these roles is all online but if lockdown restrictions permit, we are preparing to offer face-to-face mentoring in some of our schools whilst others will remain online.

Your Role as a Mentor
As a mentor you'll work with the same young person each week. Sessions of between 12-16 young people and 12-16 mentors take place weekly and are led by a Project Leader. You will be matched one-to-one with a mentee who you will support for the academic year. In your pairings and in group sessions, you will take part in character building activities and modules that allow the young people to gain knowledge and skills of the real world.
Due to the one-to-one elements of the work, you develop an amazing relationship with your mentee over the course of the year being able to see first-hand them grow and develop.

ReachOut is also a hugely sociable organisation. We run socials throughout the year to thank our mentors for their commitment and allow them to meet other mentors from projects all over Greater Manchester. We work with around 300 mentors in the region this is a brilliant networking and social opportunity!

You don't require any experience to become a ReachOut mentor as we provide all the training you will need. We run two short sessions before you begin on a project. The first is an interactive session that allows you to meet fellow mentors and learn some practical tips for working with your mentee. The second is a webinar-style session that details logistical information and safeguarding processes. There are also some online modules that will cement your knowledge!

On-going Support
Each session is led by an experienced Project Leader who is always on hand to offer support and answer your queries. Your Project Leader is also there to support you. Many of our Project Leaders began as mentors and we are really keen for as many mentors as possible to develop into this role in the future. If you are keen to take on more of a leadership role, your Project Leader can help you develop those skills. You will meet many other members of the ReachOut team throughout your time mentoring who are there to support you in any way they can. Our dedicated Volunteer Officer will also always be available and happy to help in any way that they can to ensure that you can provide the best support for your mentee and get the most from your volunteering experience.

What we expect of you
All we ask is that you can spare 1-2 hours a week and are committed, enthusiastic and positive. Before starting we ask all our volunteers to complete a DBS check (provided), provide references and attend both training sessions.
