Volunteer Mentor

ReachOut is a national mentoring and education charity, rooted in local communites. Working in under-resourced areas around Manchester, we run a series of projects for primary and secondary school students that involve a combination of 1:1 mentoring and group activities that encourage leadership, trust and responsibility. Our mentors volunteer for 2 hours every week on one of our projects across the academic year.

As a ReachOut mentor you will make a real difference to the lives of young people in your local community, you will watch them grow in social and academic confidence, develop their character and raise their aspirations.

You will be involved in one of our weekly after-school ReachOut Projects, working with either primary or secondary school students. Our sessions are fun and engaging, involving both group activities and one-to-one discussions. The high quality, intensive programmes we deliver go far beyond academic tutoring, as we believe that building character and self-confidence is key in helping young people to thrive. As a mentor you will be paired with a young person, who you will work with each week over the course of the school year, helping them to develop their character, exceed their goals and grow in confidence. You will also take part group activities that promote leadership, trust and responsibility.

Whether or not you've worked with young people before we would love to have you come and mentor with us. You will have the opportunity to develop a whole range of skills from communication and team work to leadership and problem solving. You will also be able to meet new people, make new friends and spend two hours a week having fun and knowing you're making a difference!

At ReachOut we run 3 different projects throughout the academic year – ReachOut Club, ReachOut Academy and ReachOut+. All of our projects start during the Autumn, each running for different lengths of time so that you can pick the type of project that best suits you! ReachOut Club runs in primary schools for 18 weeks between 3.30 and 5.30pm. ReachOut Academy and ReachOut+ run in secondary schools for 26 weeks between 6.00 and 8.00pm. We run sessions from Monday through to Thursday across a range of locations within London, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as offering online projects, so there is something for everyone!

Before you begin volunteering with us we will ask you to attend an online training session, complete a DBS (that we organise) and submit your references. Throughout your time volunteering you will also receive ongoing support. Each session is led by an experienced Project Leader who is always on hand to offer support and answer your queries.

Once you have completed your training you will be able to choose which day, time or session type is right for you! We do ask that you commit to the full duration of the project as this allows for the best mentee-mentor relationships to form and creates the strongest impact for our young people.

We are currently looking for volunteers for the 2023/24 academic year! If this sounds like something you are interested in, please apply now and we will be in touch with you over the summer about attending your mentor training session, all ready for you to start in the Autumn.
