About Us

This beautifully restored home has spectacular period rooms, villa garden, changing exhibitions and a Tea Room for visitors to enjoy. The House hosts a year-round programme of talks and workshops, including a legendary second-hand book sale every second Sunday of the month. Open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 11am-4.30pm.

Volunteering at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

Elizabeth Gaskell’s House depends upon a brilliant team of volunteers to open to the public and they continually recruit new volunteers. There are many opportunities for you to get involved, from helping in the Tea Room, talking to visitors in the period rooms, helping with school and community groups, maintaining the award-winning garden and other behind the scenes tasks.

Elizabeth Gaskell’s House prides itself on its unique experience – visitors are invited to touch, sit and make themselves at home. It is our volunteers who play a crucial role in providing this experience.

You do not need to know anything about the house or Elizabeth Gaskell – all you need is enthusiasm and some spare time, be that weekly or monthly.
