As a visitor engagement volunteer for Power Up and the Electricity exhibition Joseph played an important part in supporting the visitor journey, ensuring all visitors received a warm welcome to the museum. This role also aimed to ensure visitors could engage with our events and exhibitions, making their time at the museum as fun, interactive and inspiring as possible. As part of the engagement volunteer role Joseph used our interactive handling collection to engage a diverse audience with our exhibitions in a hands-on way, supporting our learning areas.
Joseph began volunteering in the summer of 2018 to gain experience within the heritage sector to support his studies and to enhance his knowledge with a career in museums in mind. He really enjoyed meeting museum staff and volunteers, also having great conversations with our visitors. Joseph is currently studying his Masters Degree in Museum Studies. From being a young child Joseph has visited the museum with family and friends and always found the exhibitions to be engaging and interesting, he felt he wanted to share his passion for the museum with visitors. Joseph then went on to being successfully recruited to the role of Visitor Experience Assistant in May 2019!
“I have met some wonderful people whilst volunteering, both on the volunteer team and members of the public. My favourite part about volunteering with the museum is getting to speak to someone on the gallery who is excited about what they are seeing. Whilst volunteering on the Electricity gallery I had a lengthy conversation with a retired science teacher who knew more than I possibly ever could on the subject but was excited about the content of the gallery and how he was learning new things from the displays.”
“I have met some wonderful people whilst volunteering, both on the volunteer team and members of the public”
Volunteers provide our museum with fantastic support. Through their passion, and enthusiasm, they help to enhance the experience for our visitors, improve access to our world-class collections and provide support behind the scenes. Our volunteers say that volunteering with us is a great way to gain skills and experience, meet new people and fuel their appetite for our museums. With exciting roles across the museum, our volunteers have an opportunity to make a positive impact on our visitors and enhance our understanding of the collection.
Visitor Engagement Volunteers help to support the teams involved with the visitor welcome and experience by answering questions to help people navigate their way around, offer guidance around timings of activities and answer basic questions sometimes relating to the area of the museum where they are based.
